Fo reals now

Ok, kitty commune pushed aside…Lets see if i can explain what i”ve been thinking about.

I’ve been thinking about this previous project ( http://mirrorsatplay.blogspot.com/2009/05/containovrflo-v3.html ) which now seems to me as a containment unti.  I’m big on ideas related to the holographic universe ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_principle  ) I basically see it as the idea that all information and knowledge is incoded in every point in space time.  so in the project linked above, that knowledge and information was made visible in an abstract sense inside the containment unit.

Now in this current work, the foundation of the previous piece is literally being flipped up side down/ a sort of mirrored, equal and opposite reflection/ and the unit is being turned into a space for communicating to the universe and recieving information from the universe/multiverse.

since the idea stemed from my insecurity of people hearing me recording myself signing, the original idea was simply a sound proof immersive pod for recording, serving a utilitarian purposes but also functioning as a “safe” zone where uninhibited communication can take place.  The original idea was for this unit to be portable and possibly even marketable for people looking for a low cost soultion for a sound proof room but this is moving into the conceptual art realm so now i’m trying to get at the real meaning of why I wanted to create a safe communication zone in the first place… and i think i’m getting there ;)

If i take this to the ideal extream, the unit would also be sheilded from any kind of electromagnetic interference ie radio/telephone/etc. waves that pass through our minds and bodies every second, so a clearer signal path can be established between commuicator and what ever point in space/time/knowledge they’re trying to communicate with/manifest in future/etc.

..I’ll try to condense this down into it’s most essential bits

here’s what i’ve been writing about lately in my sketchbook:

interdependance, a chain, some links, one depending on another while a different one depends on it.

shingles, scales, group preservation through individual preservation. greater than the sum of its parts.

sumthing

realizing what we want and what we need, first, then observing and analyzing our friends and family, and their own wants and needs, finally helping them to help yourself.

what is the importance of interdependence? is severe individuality the same as solitude and avoidance of others? does diversity enter into this question?

sorry if this is spare or dramatic, it sort of is, i was just writing stream of consciousness type stuff, brainstorming some more.

my idea so far is to have a 3d floor installation incorporating strings of flags and small to medium sized towers erected sort of meditatively. buuuuut it’s still up in the air. i think i’m going to work with sound too, not sure exactly how yet.

I’ll write some words about the ideas surrounding this in the next day or so but
it’ll be a bit of a remix of some things i was working on in
the spring that related to communication which you can get a general
idea of from surfin down some older posts on my blog http://mirrorsatplay.blogspot.com

I just want to be really playful. Like how this whole thing is about communication and connection, but I have almost no clue who is even in the show. I’m considering making a huge sign/painting that reads “I HAVE NO CLUE WHO ANY OF THESE PEOPLE ARE” in any and all languages I can translate it into.

Right now I think I’m most interested in this idea because it’s not communicating a concept of it’s own, but is actually communicating something that has to do with that particular time and space. Not really a piece that can exist on it’s own, but is really most about it’s immediate connection (or lack there of) and communicating that. Take that TBA!

It might be fun to have a video where people have to put on headphones and put their head under a cover or something, get totally isolated, just me and them and then have the audio whispered like a secret. Something like “I’m so glad I can talk with you because I feel like only you can fully understand and relate to what I have to say, you know? It’s so rare to be able to connect so deeply with someone these days, I just don’t know what I would do without you. You mean so much to me…etc etc). I guess it would be a play on how those words can mean so much, but only when there is a true connection..it is just totally weird and meaningless out of context. Frightening even…like when someone is saying that kind of thing to me and, from my perspective, there is seemingly no grounds for it. It always freaks me, but I try to be open.

I became interested in the idea of recording a natural conversation, transcribing it, and then having 2 people who’ve not heard the initial conversation read it to one another, however they please. That in itself sounds kind of uninteresting, but I’m interested in playing the original recording, then midway through, layering (in tandem) the reading of the conversation and to see how the 2 recordings might play with one another. A major concern is content—does it matter? I’m not sure. I’m pretty sure it does, but I’m unsure of what would even be interesting to explore in that realm.

What I wanna think about:

1 The way people are communicating
2 Play with communication
3 What’s communicated in the interaction of the above 2
4 What role does transcription play in this?
a-Language itself being a transcription of ideas/emotions
b-maybe have a few recordings like:
i. have people read a transcription without hearing the original conversation as mentioned before
ii. have people read a transcription with having heard the O.C.
iii. have people reproduce the interaction from memory having heard the O.C.
iv. how important is it that the people involved are who they are? for example: should I choose the people specifically or go about it with a randomness..my discretion could totally skew it, but how important is that to my objective?
5 What’s lost in the transcription? What comes from it?
6 What does this say about communication and connection?
7 How much is language a part in a true connection?
8 Will any of this mean anything at all, communicate anything, or allow me to connect with anyone?

I’d like to have some video of dance to contrast with the strong emphasis on spoken/written language.

My initial idea for my piece starts on the basis that just by putting your piece on the wall, you’re already communicating something, and my skeptical outlook on “communicating through art”. I don’t think it should be a main concern or a responsibility for artists to have to communicate something through the things they make. I want to make a piece that talks about that, but at the same time negates itself. In a way I want to make something that talks about the inefficiency of communicating through art, while at the same time contradicting myself and also trying to point to a bigger picture. Does this make sense? My idea for the actual piece was to take an excerpt from an essay I read about communication not being the main objective in art making, transfer that to a canvas most likely by way of painting, but have the text be incomplete by having it run off the page. I also wanted to spraypaint it black on top (but have the letters still be readable, just harder to read) and turn it upside down. I want it to be a pain in the ass to read basically. My idea of turning it upside down is akin to someone turning a cross upside down. I want to play with the idea of defining something by its opposite. I hope this makes sense, if not please let me know and I’ll try and clarify.
